Taxes
Oklahoma has 3 programs that can lower property taxes for older adults: Senior Valuation Limitation, Additional Homestead Exemption and Claim for Credit or Refund of Property Tax (Form 538-H). Each one has its own rules and deadline.
Oklahoma's senior valuation freeze stops the taxable value of your home from going up once you are approved. You may qualify if you are 65 or older by January 1 and your household income is under your county's limit, which is based on the HUD median income for the county. You apply with your county assessor by March 15.
| Age | Head of household 65 or older as of January 1 |
|---|---|
| Household income limit (2026 form) | No more than the HUD qualifying income for your county for the year before. It differs by county and changes each year; ask your county assessor for the figure. |
| Home | You may qualify if you own the home and live in it on January 1 |
| What counts as income | Gross income of everyone living in the home, taxable or not, including Social Security. Veterans' disability compensation isn't counted. |
| Freeze | The taxable market value of your home doesn't go up while you remain eligible, unless you make improvements, stop owning or living there, or your income goes over the limit |
|---|
| Application deadline | March 15, or within 30 days after you get a notice that your value went up, whichever is later |
|---|---|
| Renewal | Not stated on the state form. Ask your county assessor whether you need to send income information again. |

Oklahoma's Additional Homestead Exemption takes another $1,000 off the assessed value of your home if your household income is low. The 2026 state form sets the income limit at $30,000 in every county. If you are 65 or older by March 15, you don't have to reapply each year.
| Age | Any head of household with a homestead exemption may apply. At 65 or older by March 15, you don't need to reapply each year. |
|---|---|
| Household income limit, tax year 2026 (last year's income) | $30,000 or less in all counties |
| Home | You may qualify if you own the home and live in it on January 1 |
| Exemption | An extra $1,000 off your home's assessed value, on top of the regular homestead exemption |
|---|
| Application deadline | March 15, or within 30 days after you get a notice of a change in value, whichever is later |
|---|---|
| Renewal | Every year if you are under 65. At 65 or older (by March 15), no yearly application, but you must tell the assessor if household income goes over the limit. |
