How Mississippi is different

Where Mississippi's rules differ from the federal rules for Property tax relief for seniors.

  • Once you have it, the exemption can absorb most later increases in your home's value, which works much like a freeze
  • Failing to file or pay Mississippi income tax, or claiming another state's residency, can cost you the exemption and require repayment

Good to know

  • Homeowners under 65 get a smaller regular exemption, a tax credit of up to $300.
