California SSI supplement

California adds its own monthly payment, called SSP (State Supplementary Payment), to federal SSI. Social Security pays it in the same check as your SSI, so you don't apply separately.

Good to know

  • You may get the state supplement even if your income is a little too high for federal SSI, as long as it is below the combined SSI and state amount
  • With the state part added, the most an older person living on their own with no other income can get in 2026 is $1,233.94 a month ($994 federal SSI plus $239.94 SSP).
  • "Without a kitchen" means you don't have working cooking and food storage facilities and aren't given meals. This higher rate starts in the month you ask Social Security for it.
