How California is different

Where California's rules differ from the federal rules for Medicare Savings Programs.

  • Savings limit far higher than the federal one: $130,000 for one person and $195,000 for a couple, reinstated January 1, 2026 after two years with no limit
  • The savings limit goes up by $65,000 for each additional person in the household, up to 10 people

Good to know

  • Income limits: uses the federal limits as far as we can tell. The county Medi-Cal handbook sets them at 100% (QMB), 120% (SLMB) and 135% (QI-1) of the federal poverty level after a $20 income disregard, the same formula as the federal limits.
  • Your main home, one vehicle and household items don't count toward the savings limit.
