How Wisconsin is different

Where Wisconsin's rules differ from the federal rules for State SSI supplements.

  • Paid separately by the state (Wisconsin Department of Health Services), but you don't apply separately: it starts automatically when you qualify for federal SSI
  • Everyone who qualifies for any federal SSI payment gets the full state payment

Good to know

  • SSI-E is for people who need at least 40 hours a month of long-term support at home, or who live in certain licensed adult family homes, small community-based residential facilities or residential care apartment complexes. Ask your aging and disability resource center (ADRC) or county agency for an assessment.
  • People on SSI in Wisconsin automatically get Medicaid, and if they also have Medicare the state pays their Medicare premiums, deductibles and copays.
  • A small group of people who got the state payment in December 1995 keep it even without federal SSI.
