For people living on their own, the state's rules set it at $22.10 a month for one person and $33.30 for a couple, paid by the state, not in your Social Security check. People in a licensed personal care home or a domiciliary care home get a much larger supplement, paid with their SSI.

How Pennsylvania is different

Where Pennsylvania's rules differ from the federal rules for State SSI supplements.

  • Paid separately by the state for people living on their own or in someone else's home; supplements for personal care and domiciliary care homes come in the same check as your SSI
  • If your income is a little too high for SSI, you may apply to the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services for the state payment alone

Good to know

  • People on SSI who live in someone else's household get $25.53 a month ($38.44 for a couple) under the state's rules.
  • If you get the state payment alone, without SSI, you also get Medicaid.
