Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) in Louisiana

Louisiana's LIHEAP helps pay heating bills in winter and cooling bills in spring and summer, with crisis help all year if you get a shut-off notice.

The Louisiana Housing Corporation runs it through a local agency in each parish, and homes with someone 60 or older get an extra $100 and set times to apply.

How to apply in Louisiana

In person
Contact the LIHEAP agency for your parish; the Energy Assistance page has a provider directory with each agency's phone numbers. Crisis applications are taken only through the local agency, not online. A statewide online application opens for some seasons; it was closed when we checked.

How Louisiana is different

Where Louisiana's rules differ from the federal rules for LIHEAP heating and cooling help.

  • Homes with someone 60 or older get an extra $100
  • People 60 and older get a set weekly time or day to apply
  • Crisis help is available all year

Good to know

  • Benefits depend on eligibility and funding. LHC and local agencies will never ask for account logins, passwords or bank details, and there is no fee to apply.
  • You can get one crisis benefit a year. Homeowners who need a heating or cooling unit repaired or replaced may get that instead of a crisis bill payment.
