An older woman in a warm cardigan turns up the thermostat in her hallway

In summer it helps with cooling if someone in your home is 70 or older, a young child on ADC, or has a heat-sensitive illness. Crisis payments for shut-off notices, deposits and reconnection fees are available all year, and you apply through the Department of Health and Human Services online, by phone or at a local office.

How to apply in Nebraska

In person
Visit a local DHHS office. The state lists them on its Local DHHS Offices page. If you already have an open DHHS assistance case, you can ask for LIHEAP without filling out a new application.

Applying is free. Nobody should charge you to apply.

  • Summer cooling help is limited to households with someone 70 or older, a young child on ADC, or a heat-sensitive medical condition.
  • Crisis payments are available all year, not only in winter.
  • Households with an open DHHS case can ask for LIHEAP without a new application.
