How Nebraska is different

Where Nebraska's rules differ from the federal rules for SNAP for seniors.

  • USDA listed Nebraska, as of October 2024, as waiving the renewal interview for households where all adults are 60 or older or disabled and no one has earned income

Good to know

  • Nebraska stopped SNAP purchases of soda and energy drinks on Jan. 1, 2026, and planned to add candy on Nov. 1, 2026. A federal court threw out that waiver on June 22, 2026, and DHHS says it is working with stores to lift the limits, which may take time.
  • Nebraska says the federal work rule for adults without dependents now covers ages 18 to 64. Once you turn 65, it no longer applies.
  • Since Oct. 20, 2025, Nebraska follows the 2025 federal law that ended SNAP for refugees, people granted asylum and some other immigrants. Green card holders, Cuban and Haitian entrants and COFA citizens may still qualify.
  • A household that gets energy assistance (LIHEAP) now gets the standard utility allowance automatically only if it includes someone 60 or older or disabled.
