South Dakota keeps a savings limit for everyone, so a household with someone 60 or older or disabled may have up to $4,750 in countable savings. If you get SSI and live alone or with a spouse who also gets SSI, you may be able to use the simpler Improved Nutrition program instead, with no interview.

How South Dakota is different

Where South Dakota's rules differ from the federal rules for SNAP for seniors.

  • SSI recipients who live alone or with a spouse who also gets SSI can choose the Improved Nutrition (IN) program: a simpler application with no interview and no proof needed, a set benefit based on housing costs, and approval for three years

Good to know

  • South Dakota's manual applies the three-month SNAP time limit to adults 18 through 64 who are able to work and have no dependents, unless they work or are exempt. It stops the month a person turns 65.
  • South Dakota has asked USDA to let it bar SNAP from being used for soft drinks (sweetened non-alcoholic drinks). It would start within six months of federal approval; milk, milk alternatives and 100% juice would still be allowed.
