If your household's gross income is at or under 200% of the poverty level, Maine doesn't count your savings. Maine also pays for food help for some older or disabled immigrants who can't get federal SNAP, including people who lost it under the 2025 federal law.

How Maine is different

Where Maine's rules differ from the federal rules for SNAP for seniors.

  • State-funded food help, in the same amount SNAP would pay, for lawfully present immigrants who can't get federal SNAP and are elderly or disabled (among other groups), including people who lost SNAP under the 2025 federal law
  • Renewal interview waived for households where all adults are 60 or older or disabled and no one works, on USDA's list as of October 2024

Good to know

  • Maine law requires the state to tell every applicant they can ask to skip a face-to-face interview, as federal rules allow.
  • You don't have to send a six-month report if no one in your home has earnings and no one is 18 to 59 without a disabling condition.
  • Maine says adults 18 to 64 who can work and don't live with a child under 14 may need to work or join a work program 80 hours a month to get SNAP for more than three months in a 36-month period, unless they are exempt.
  • To guard against theft, Maine EBT cards work only in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont for now. Call 1-855-797-4357 if you need to use yours somewhere else.
