How New Mexico is different

Where New Mexico's rules differ from the federal rules for SNAP for seniors.

  • New Mexico adds a state supplement so people 60 and older or with a disability get at least $100 a month in SNAP
  • Approval can last up to 36 months for people 60+ or disabled with no job income, with a yearly notice to report changes in expenses
  • As of October 2024, USDA listed New Mexico as waiving the renewal interview for households where all adults are 60+ or disabled and no one works
  • One-time state-funded food payment for SNAP customers who lost SNAP in 2026 because of new federal immigration-status rules (not for new applicants)

Good to know

  • State rules limit the $100 supplement to households where everyone is 60 or older or disabled, no one has job income, and everyone gets SNAP.
  • New Mexico says that under 2025 federal changes, adults 18 to 64 who can work and don't care for a child under 14 must work, volunteer or train 80 hours a month to keep SNAP, unless an exception applies. People 65 and older are exempt.
