Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for seniors in Kentucky

Kentucky's SNAP, once called food stamps, puts money on an EBT card each month to help buy groceries.

If you are 60 or older or disabled and no one in your home works, Kentucky may put you in its simplified senior program (ESAP): no interview at renewal, fewer papers to send, and approval for 36 months. People 60 and older who get SSI can also use a separate simplified program called SAFE.

How to apply in Kentucky

In person
Go to your local Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) office. After you apply, DCBS will contact you to set up an interview.

Applying is free. Nobody should charge you to apply.

How Kentucky is different

Where Kentucky's rules differ from the federal rules for SNAP for seniors.

  • Simplified senior program (Elderly Simplified Application Project) for people 60 or older or disabled with no earned income. Children may live with you, but no other adults.
  • No interview at renewal for ESAP households, and Kentucky checks records itself so you send fewer papers
  • ESAP households get a standard medical deduction if they show they have out-of-pocket medical costs
  • A separate simplified program, Simplified Assistance for the Elderly (SAFE), for people 60 and older who get SSI

Good to know

  • Kentucky says adults 18 through 64 who have no disability, no children under 14 at home and no other exemption must work or train an average of 20 hours a week, or they can get SNAP for only three months in three years. This applies in most counties since November 1, 2025.
  • When you apply or renew, Kentucky checks you for both regular SNAP and ESAP and tells you within 30 days which one you get.
