Michigan's Food Assistance Program, which the state now mostly calls SNAP, puts money for groceries on a Michigan Bridge Card each month.

There is no savings limit if your household's gross income is at or under 200% of the poverty level, and if everyone in your home is 60 or older or disabled and your only income is Social Security or SSI, approval lasts two years. If everyone in your household is 60 or older, disabled or homeless, you may also use your Bridge Card at some restaurants.

How to apply in Michigan

In person
Pick up an application at your local MDHHS county office during business hours; no appointment is needed. If a disability keeps you from coming in, ask the office to send someone to your home to help.
By mail
Print the paper application from the MDHHS forms page and mail, fax or hand-deliver it to your local MDHHS office.

Applying is free. Nobody should charge you to apply.

Good to know

  • Michigan's manual says a household with someone 60+ or disabled whose gross income is over 200% of poverty must meet the savings limit and the net income limit.
  • If you get SSI and have no other income, the Michigan Combined Application Project (MiCAP) can give you food benefits with little paperwork: your SSI interview counts as your food interview. Call 1-877-522-8050 for details.
  • Since March 1, 2026, Michigan applies federal work rules to some adults ages 18 to 64 without young children. They may need to work or train 80 hours a month to get food help for more than three months in three years. Some counties and cities are exempt for now.
