How Washington is different

Where Washington's rules differ from the federal rules for SNAP for seniors.

  • Elderly Simplified Application Project: approval lasts 36 months, with no mid-certification reviews, for households where everyone is 65 or older or an adult with a disability and no one has earned income
  • No recertification interview for those households when their information can be checked through existing records
  • State-funded Food Assistance Program (FAP) for lawfully present immigrants who meet every Basic Food rule except citizenship or immigration status, paying the same amount SNAP would

Good to know

  • Washington says adults 18 to 64 who can work and have no children under 14 at home are in a group whose benefits may be limited to three months in 36 months unless they meet work rules. People 60 to 64 may be in this group if no other exemption applies.
  • Everyone else gets Basic Food approval for 12 months at a time, with a review due at six months, and must have an interview when they apply.
