How Alaska is different

Where Alaska's rules differ from the federal rules for SNAP for seniors.

  • Simpler process for households where all adults are 60 or older or have a disability and no one has earned income (Elderly Simplified Application Project, running through November 30, 2029)
  • No interview at renewal for those households unless questions come up
  • Approval for those households lasts 36 months instead of 24, with no mid-point report

Good to know

  • Alaska started broad-based categorical eligibility on July 1, 2025, so most households that apply or renew after that date are not held to a savings limit.
  • In Alaska, SNAP can also be used for certain hunting and fishing supplies for subsistence.
