How Indiana is different

Where Indiana's rules differ from the federal rules for SNAP for seniors.

  • Approval lasts 36 months for households where everyone is 65 or older or disabled and no one works (Elderly Simplified Application Project)
  • Those households don't have to send in the six-month interim report

Good to know

  • Indiana raised the age for its simplified senior approvals from 60 to 65 in August 2026.
  • Indiana's policy manual, updated in 2026, counts people as elderly for SNAP starting at 65, which affects the medical deduction and the gross income exemption. Indiana's SNAP web page still says 60, so ask DFR which applies if you are 60 to 64.
  • Indiana stopped using broad-based categorical eligibility in April 2026, so every household now has a savings limit.
  • Since Jan. 1, 2026, SNAP benefits in Indiana can't be used to buy candy or sugary drinks.
  • Starting Nov. 23, 2026, SNAP benefits left unused for about nine months (274 days) are removed from the EBT card and can't be replaced.
