Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for seniors in Maryland

Maryland's SNAP, which the state used to call the Food Supplement Program, puts money on the Independence Card each month to help buy groceries.

If someone in your home is 60 or older and your federal benefit is under $50 a month, Maryland adds enough to bring it to $50. Older adults with no earnings can use a simpler application and stay approved for 36 months without a renewal interview.

How Maryland is different

Where Maryland's rules differ from the federal rules for SNAP for seniors.

  • If someone in your home is 60 or older and the federal benefit is under $50 a month, Maryland tops it up to $50. It is added automatically; you don't apply separately.
  • Simplified application for people 60 and older with no earned income (Elderly Simplified Application Project). New applicants have one interview; there is no interview at renewal.
  • Maryland Senior Nutrition Assistance Program (MSNAP): people 60 and older on SSI who live alone or buy food separately may get a short mailed application, no interview, and a set monthly amount
  • Restaurant Meals Program: people 60 and older (and their spouses), people with disabilities and people without housing can use SNAP for meals at participating restaurants in some counties

Good to know

  • Maryland says that since November 1, 2025, adults up to age 64 without a child under 14 at home must work, volunteer or train 80 hours a month to keep SNAP, unless an exception applies (such as a disability or medical reason).
  • Maryland says that under the 2025 federal law, refugees, asylees and other lawful immigrants now need a green card to get SNAP.
  • MSNAP pays a set amount, so someone with high medical or housing costs may get more from regular SNAP; caseworkers are told to point this out.
